During the United Nation General Assembly, President Biden recognized the recent protests in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini. She recently died after being arrested by the morality policy for wearing her hijab incorrectly. Her death has set off a wave of protests in Iran with many women cutting their hair and burning their hijabs in the streets.

BIDEN: “Perhaps singular among this body’s achievements stands The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is the standard by which our forebears challenged us to measure ourselves. They made clear in 1948, human rights are the basis for all that we seek to achieve. And yet today in 2022, fundamental freedoms are at risk in every part of our world. From the violations in Xinjiang, detailed recent reports by the office of U.N [and] reports detailing by the US High Commissioner to the horrible abuses against pro-democracy activist and ethnic minorities by the military regime in Burma to the increased repression of women and girls by the Taliban and Afghanistan. And today we stand with the brave citizens and the brave women of Iran, who right now are demonstrating to secure their basic rights.”
