"The work I do is not ... political": Fertility doctor stresses need for IVF protections on World IVF Day.

A fertility doctor on Thursday highlighted the need for in vitro fertilization protections, and the wide range of his patients who need the procedure, as Democrats marked World IVF Day.

“I have a patient, a woman who was born without a uterus but still can have her own genetic child. She needs IVF. I have a patient, a man who had cancer and needed to freeze his sperm before chemotherapy to have — in order to become a father. He needs IVF. I have a couple whose four pregnancies ended in devastating miscarriages because of genetic disease. They need IVF so they don't miscarry again,” Dr. Mark Payson, the medical director of CCRM Fertility of Northern Virginia, said at a speech with several House Democrats.

“The work I do is not, or at least should not, be political,” he added.

Democratic House Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA), Rep. Susan Wild (D-PA), and other women House Democrats gave the speech in front of the U.S. Capitol building to promote legislation that would protect IVF access nationwide in response to the Alabama Supreme Court decision earlier this year.
