"Michelle and I couldn't be prouder to endorse you": The Obamas call VP Kamala Harris to endorse her for president.

The Obamas called Vice President Kamala Harris to endorse her for president, arguably her most high-profile backing as the Democratic Party coalesces around her as its likely presidential nominee.

“We called to say Michelle and I couldn't be prouder to endorse you and to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office,” former President Barack Obama said in a video published Friday morning showing the call.

“I can't have this phone call without saying to my girl Kamala: I am proud of you,” former First Lady Michelle Obama said. “This is going to be historic.”

President Joe Biden on Sunday announced he would not seek reelection after his widely-panned debate performance last month against Donald Trump, acquiescing to mounting Democratic pressure. He then backed Harris to replace him. Less than 32 hours later, the vice president secured enough verbal commitments from delegates to secure the nomination at the Democratic National Convention next month. Top party leaders — former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries — endorsed her this week, all but clearing her path to face Trump in the general election.
