DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ testimony before the House Homeland Security Committee on Tuesday became tense when Chair Mark Green (R-TN) angrily tried to get Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) to stop going over her speaking time.

“The gentlelady's time has expired,” Green said after Mayorkas answered a question from Jackson Lee about whether members of his Homeland Security Department have said they don’t want to protect the country. “We're having to insist on the five minutes because of the time remaining.”

“The gentlelady is not recognized,” Green said as he attempted to recognize Rep. Mike Ezell (R-MS) to begin his speaking time.

“I see no reason for [Mayorkas] to be impeached,” Jackson Lee said, continuing to speak.

“The gentlelady is not recognized!” Green said as he slammed the gavel loudly.

Jackson Lee on Tuesday criticized Republicans for the impeachment of Mayorkas in February. The GOP alleged he committed “high crimes and misdemeanors” by failing to secure the southern border and enforce immigration laws. House Republicans are set to officially transfer the impeachment articles to the Democratic-controlled Senate on Tuesday. A trial, if it happens, is expected to be short and result in Mayorkas’ acquittal.
