UFC's Daniel Cormier shares his advice to kids who come from poverty like him: "Don't fall victim to your circumstance," he said on the Pivot Podcast.
“In the bad, you don't get lost in it. In the adversity, you try to like strive and propel yourself to different heights, because when you're, when you come from a situation like mine, well, you don't have much, you're going to get knocked back.
“And most times when you get knocked back, you start searching for the fast answer, right? Going to try to sell drugs, you want to try to steal, you want to try to do all those things that are going to not only not help, it’s gonna just push you further and further into the situation that you're in.
“So, in the adversity, don't fall victim or don't feel like a victim. Try to get stronger through that adversity.
“And I think that is ultimately what allowed for me to be who I am today, from losing my dad to losing my daughter to losing my roomate in college college, like, all the things that I've had to deal with: the big losses in fighting the loss in the Olympic games. Like, all those things that I dealt with, I allowed it to boost me forward.
“So in the adversity, don't fall victim to your circumstance.”
