Singer and songwriter Taylor Swift received a Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa from Jason King, Chair of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music which is a part of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts today.

Swift started her commencement speech by thanking NYU for making her a doctor, technically on paper at least.

But she was quick to add, “Not the type of doctor you would want around in case of an emergency unless your specific emergency was that you desperately needed to hear a song.”

She went on to give advice to the graduating students on relationships and asked them to choose the things that are worth spending time on.

She claimed that cringing is unavoidable in a person’s life so, “learn to live alongside cringe”, Swift said. She gave an example of a time in 2012 when Swift used to dress like a housewife from the 1950 era, but she was having fun at that time. According to Swift, everyone cringes retrospectively, no matter how hard one tries to avoid it.
