Four men (and Martha Stewart) will be the recipients of the 2024 Ruth Bader Ginsburg Leadership Award, an award originally established to recognize “women who exemplify human qualities of empathy and humility.”
Ginsburg’s two children, Jane and James Ginsburg, have informed the Opperman Foundation — which selects the recipients without input from the Ginsburg family — that they would like their mother’s name removed from the award, unless its original criteria is restored.
In addition to conservative billionaires Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch, other 2024 recipients include lifestyle guru Martha Stewart, financier (and convicted felon) Mike Milken, and actor Sylvester Stallone. The ceremony will take place in April at the Library of Congress.
Jane Ginsburg called the selection of winner “an affront to the memory of our mother,” and James Ginsburg took to CNN to rail against Musk and Murdoch in particular.
“When you think of people trying to create a more just society, which of course was Mom’s ultimate goal, those are probably about the last names that would come to mind,” he said.
