Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Tuesday shot down a question about whether he would endorse Donald Trump for president as top party leaders have rallied around the leading Republican candidate for 2024.
CNN's Manu Raju asked McConnell why he was holding out on endorsing “the likely nominee” after Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) endorsed the former president over the weekend.
“I don't have any announcement about that today,” McConnell responded.
His comments come after a New York Times report Monday that members of McConnell's and Trump's camps have been working behind the scenes to pave the way for the highest-ranking Senate Republican to endorse Trump.
The two men haven’t spoken since December 2020, Trump has frequently attacked McConnell, and the Kentucky senator has been reluctant to speak about him after he initially criticized Trump for the January 6th insurrection. But McConnell has also repeatedly suggested he would back the Republican presidential nominee in 2024.
