Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) grilled TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew about his nationality, and asked him questions about criticizing China in the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Big Tech CEO hearing Wednesday.
Cotton asked Chew what nation Chew is a citizen of, whether he is a citizen of any other nation, if he’s ever applied for Chinese citizenship, what passports he holds, and whether he has ever been a member of the Chinese Communist Party or ever been associated or affiliated with the CCP.
Chew reiterated repeatedly that he is Singaporean, only holds a Singaporean passport, has served in Singapore’s military, and has never been involved with the Chinese Communist Party: “No, senator. Again, I’m Singaporean.”
“You said earlier, in response to your question, that what happened at Tiananmen Square in June of 1989 was a massive protest. Did anything else happen in Tiananmen Square?” Cotton also asked Chew during his questioning.
“Yes, I think it’s well documented. There was a massacre,” Chew responded.
