Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, spoke to a rowdy and celebratory crowd about the Stand Up to Violence program. The programs aims to reduce crime in the Bronx.

AOC: “And so what we did in the Bronx is that anyone who got admitted from a gunshot wound, a stab wound, etc., immediately got flagged for the Stand Up to Violence program. and here's what we did. We brought in only - not just a doctor to stitch the person up, we brought in a social worker, we brought in mentors, we brought in housing specialist. And you know, we found? We brought in psychiatrists, we brought in psychologists, you know what we found? Here’s what we found, here’s a fact. We reduced re-occurrence of crime by more than 50%. It was more effective than any policing intervention. So you want to solve crime? Let’s build affordable housing. You want to solve crime? Let’s get mental health support. You want to solve crime? Let’s get good jobs. You want to solve crime? Let’s make this a New York City that works for everybody.”
