Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg (D) on Tuesday celebrated the council's resolution declaring the city a sanctuary for trans people.

Ahead of the Sacramento Council voting unanimously Tuesday night to declare the city a sanctuary for transgender people, the mayor thanked council members for sending him the resolution. The move mandates that city resources cannot be used to enforce laws passed in other states that restrict access to gender-affirming care.

“There is nothing more important or powerful than people — especially young people — knowing that they are loved and accepted for who they are,” Steinberg said. “We debate many things. There are many shades of gray, many middle grounds when it comes to difficult policy. When it comes to people being loved and accepted, when it comes to people's civil rights, we give no quarter in this city.”

“We support you. We love you. We welcome you. We welcome those from other places that are scared and aren't welcome. That's our values. That's what Sacramento has always stood for, even through hard, hard times,” Steinberg continued. “So, this resolution is appropriate. I think it is powerful, and it is necessary because no one in this city should feel like they are unseen, unheard, and they certainly should not feel afraid of who they are living here.”
