Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) on leaked McCarthy audio: “Why don't we move forward?”

Representative Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) lashed out at the media today for reporting on recently uncovered audio posted by the New York Times. In the recording, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) expresses exasperation with former President Trump and his concerns regarding several Republicans following the January 6 insurrection.

McCarthy is heard telling fellow Republicans regarding former President Trump, “I’ve had it with this guy.” McCarthy also admits in the audio that he feared several fellow Republicans were endangering the safety of other lawmakers. McCarthy also stated he would advise Trump to resign.

The audio is notable in the wake of McCarthy previously criticizing the New York Times for falsely reporting that he had made these remarks.

In response to a pool reporter pointing out that McCarthy lied to the media, Salazar, herself a former journalist, shot back, “people change their mind; things happen.” She added that what happened on January 6 was “despicable” and that you can’t storm any buildings, especially the Capitol. But the media won’t move forward and focus on what’s happening now because it doesn’t produce a headline, and that’s not convenient, Salazar said.
