Power to the people, healing divisions, and winning “like never before” — Donald Trump hit on some similar themes in his two inauguration speeches, eight years apart.
During his second inaugural address Monday from the Capitol Rotunda, the new Republican president mostly gave an Election Night victory-style speech, focusing on his plans for his second term, such as planned executive orders to crack down on immigration and DEI policies.
But at times, he called back to themes from his first speech in 2017, after he won the 2016 presidential election.
“We are transferring power from Washington, D.C., and giving it back to you, the people,” Trump said in 2017.
“For many years, a radical and corrupt establishment has extracted power and wealth from our citizens,” Trump said Monday.
2017: “A new national pride will stir our souls, lift our sights, and heal our divisions.”
2025: “My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier.”
2017: “I will fight for you with every breath in my body, and I will never, ever let you down.”
2025: “I am with you, I will fight for you, and I will win for you.”
