Highschool students all across Virginia staged a walkout to protest Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin’s plan to strip rights from transgender students. The new guidelines would have transgender students use the bathrooms that correspond to their sex assigned at birth and require schools to get parental approval before making official changes to a child’s name or pronoun. The guidelines would reverse previous Virginia governor’s, Democratic Governor Ralph Northam, state order that significantly advanced transgender students’ rights. These guidelines introduced by Governor Youngkin are part of a nationwide rise of anti-transgender legislation, especially in regards to students. Florida and Texas have both introduced anti-transgender legislation that are extremely detrimental and harmful to the well-being of transgender students.
