In her first remarks since President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race and endorsed her, Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday called his record “unmatched in modern history.”
Speaking at the South Lawn of the White House, at an event celebrating the 2022-2023 NCAA champions, Harris lauded the president’s record.
“Joe Biden's legacy of accomplishment over the past three years is unmatched in modern history. In one term, he has already — yes, you may clap!” Harris said, prompting applause. “In one term, he has already surpassed the legacy of most presidents who have served two terms in office.”
“President Joe Biden fights for the American people,” Harris added, “and we are deeply, deeply grateful for his service to our nation.”
After mounting pressure from Democrats to exit the presidential race following his widely-panned performance in the presidential debate against Donald Trump late last month, Biden announced he would no longer seek a second term and instead backed his vice president to succeed him. In the past day, most Democrats in Congress and almost all of the high-profile alternatives to Harris have backed her campaign for president, paving the way for her likely nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month.
Harris also said the president was “feeling much better and recovering fast” from COVID-19 and “looks forward to getting back on the road.”
