Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday blamed Donald Trump for Roe v. Wade being overturned.
"You know, when he was president, Donald Trump, the former president, handpicked three members of the United States Supreme Court because he intended for them to overturn Roe v. Wade," Harris said in remarks at a gathering of a historically Black sorority, pointing to Trump appointing conservative Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett during his first term as president.
"The United States Supreme Court, previously the court of Thurgood [Marshall] and RBG [Ruth Bader Ginsburg]," Harris said.
"And as he intended, they did [overturn Roe v. Wade]," the likely Democratic nominee for president said.
The Supreme Court in 2022 overturned the constitutional right to abortion in their 6-3 Dobbs v. Jackson decision, leaving individual states to decide on abortion rights and opening up a score of abortion bans.
"Well, let me tell you something," Harris continued. "When I am president of the United States, and when Congress passes a law to restore those freedoms, I will sign it into law."
