Donald Trump appears to be attempting to rewrite history.
In an interview that aired Sunday, following his conviction Thursday in New York, the former president falsely claimed that he “didn’t say ‘lock her up’” about his Democratic opponent in the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton.
Trump faces the possibility of a prison sentence after a jury last week found him guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records as part of a hush money scheme to bury stories of alleged extramarital affairs that he feared could hurt his campaign in 2016. He was the first former president to stand trial on criminal charges.
“You famously said, regarding Hillary Clinton, ‘lock her up.’ You declined to do that as president,” Will Cain, a co-host of “Fox & Friends Weekend,” said to Trump.
“I didn’t say, ‘lock her up,’ but the people said, ‘lock her up, lock her up,’” Trump replied.
Trump did in fact use that language on multiple occasions in 2016, and after he quieted the calls when he became president, he resumed them while he campaigned against Joe Biden in 2020. The Recount rolled back the tape — watch.
