“The rules were you guys weren’t gonna fact-check”: JD Vance complains as CBS News cuts mics on VP debate stage.

Republican JD Vance during his vice presidential debate with Democrat Tim Walz on Tuesday complained when CBS News fact-checked him about his racist lies about migrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio.

“For our viewers, Springfield, Ohio, does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status, Temporary Protected Status,” CBS News anchor and debate moderator Margaret Brennan said in a surprise fact-check during the debate in New York City.

“The rules were that you guys weren't gonna fact-check,” Vance protested as Brennan tried to shift to another topic.

CBS News had previously said the candidates, not the moderators, would be responsible for fact-checking each other. CNN, during its June presidential debate between Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, did not fact-check, while ABC News earned Trump’s scorn last month for fact-checking him several times during his faceoff with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.

Brennan and fellow moderator Norah O'Donnell, meanwhile, cut off Walz and Vance’s mics after the fact-check as the candidates tried to talk over each other.
