The Easter Bunny on Monday took questions from reporters at the White House press briefing.
“Are you the president of the United States?” a reporter asked. “Are you the vice president? Are you a senior White House official?”
The costumed Easter Bunny shrugged and gestured for more questions.
“Thumbs up?” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said as she approached the podium. “Two thumbs up from the bunny. All right. Thank you. Bye! Happy Easter.”
The Easter Bunny’s appearance offered some levity after political polarization had threatened to overshadow the White House’s 144th annual Easter Egg Roll celebration. Republicans over the weekend railed against the White House for commemorating International Transgender Day of Visibility on the same day as Easter Sunday, even though the visibility day is observed annually on March 31.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) called the presidential proclamation “appalling” as the White House fired back against what it described as “cruel, hateful, and dishonest rhetoric.”
