Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) told CNN’s Manu Raju that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) should be ready to shut down the government in the fall to protest Donald Trump’s conviction in New York and other prosecutions.
“We aren’t a serious country anymore. We’re literally a banana republic,” the Georgia Republican told Raju in the halls of Congress on Monday. “So, what does it matter funding the government? The American people don’t give a shit.”
Last week, a jury found Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records as part of a hush money scheme to bury stories of alleged extramarital affairs that he feared could hurt his campaign in 2016. He was the first former president to stand trial on criminal charges.
Greene has clashed with Johnson over him eliciting Democrats’ support to stave off a previous looming government funding deadline and to pass aid to Ukraine. She even worked to oust him from his post — however, the vote last month to kill her motion to vacate was swift and overwhelming, with 196 Republicans and 163 Democrats voting to kill it.
