The audience at “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on Monday night had a laugh — when he said CNN is objective.
During his interview with CNN host Kaitlan Collins, Colbert said, “I know you guys are objective over there, that you just report the news as it is,” as he began to ask her whether CNN expected President Joe Biden to exit the 2024 presidential race.
The studio audience then laughed, causing Collins to ask, “Is that supposed to be a laugh line?”
“It wasn't supposed to be, but I guess it is,” he said with a wry smile.
Colbert also spoke to Collins about her time as a White House reporter, and her view of the race now that Kamala Harris has become the Democratic nominee, after Biden ended his reelection campaign in response to mounting party pressure.
“Trump has kind of been thrown on his heels by this and he's not really sure how to go after Vice President Harris. He knew his attack lines on President Biden. He really has struggled with how to go after someone who's 20 years younger than him, who is a different gender, a different race,” Collins said. “It's kind of been this moment where he has not been able to coalesce around a single attack line.”
