Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) railed against the leak of the Supreme Court’s draft ruling that would overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark court case that established a woman’s constitutional right to choose to have an abortion.
As he spoke to reporters, Cruz said he was “utterly horrified” that the draft was leaked and that he has never experienced anything like this during his entire career litigating before the Supreme Court. He said he was sure that all nine justices were now uncertain about how they could continue to proceed to decide cases.
Cruz went on to characterize the Democratic Party as “vicious” and seemed to insinuate that Democrats were in some way responsible for the leak, asserting that Democrats’ “partisan politicking” was influencing how employees of the Court operate. In an interview on Fox News, Cruz blamed a “left-wing law clerk” for the leak.
Cruz called this an “incredible threat to our independent judiciary.”
The Supreme Court’s holding, which could change, is final once published. The final holding is expected in a few months.
