House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Friday urged transparency on the reportedly damning House Ethics report about Matt Gaetz that has not been released.
"I think it was [SCOTUS] Justice Brandeis who once said that 'sunlight is the best disinfectant in a democracy,'" Jeffries said during his weekly press conference.
"Transparency is always the best course of action, particularly when it relates to high-ranking government officials," the Democratic representative from New York said.
Matt Gaetz was tapped by Donald Trump to be his nominee to lead the Justice Department as attorney general. Within hours of Trump picking him, Gaetz resigned from Congress. His departure effectively ended the House Ethics Committee's investigation — which started in 2021 — into allegations against him, including drug use and sexual misconduct. The committee was reportedly poised to vote whether to release a report on the findings as early as Friday.
Despite clamor for the report to be released due to the interest of Gaetz leading the Justice Department, the House Ethics Chair Michael Guest repeatedly noted that there currently aren't plans to release the report. Speaker Mike Johnson also told reporters that he is against the report's release, saying that it would be a "breach of protocol."
