Steve Bannon suggests that Trump can run for a third term in 2028: "[Constitution] doesn't actually say 'consecutive.'"

Former White House adviser Steve Bannon on Sunday incorrectly floated the idea that Donald Trump could run for a third presidential term in 2028.

"[Republican lawyer] Mike Davis tells me since [the Constitution] doesn't actually say 'consecutive' [terms], that, I don't know, maybe we do it again in '28," Bannon said to an enthusiastic crowd at at the New York Young Republican Club's annual gala.

"Are you guys down for that? Trump '28?" Bannon asked the crowd, which cheered in approval for a third Trump term.

The 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution plainly states that no person may be elected president more than twice, consecutive or otherwise. Trump himself rejected the idea of repealing the 22nd Amendment in April, saying he "wouldn't be in favor of a challenge" and that he intends to "serve four years and do a great job." But he also reportedly joked to House Republicans last month that he wouldn't run again in 2028 "unless you do something," and has promised to be a dictator for just his first day in office.

Bannon was one of Trump's chief strategists during his first administration. He recently went to prison for four months after he refused to comply with a congressional subpoena related to January 6th. Bannon was released in October.
