SHIFT Series: Can We Engineer Our Way Out of the Climate Crisis?

Rising sea levels, ravaging wildfires, extreme weather and worsening natural disasters have placed the global climate crisis front and center in our society. This summer’s UN report on climate change did not mince words: Climate change is here, it’s worsening, and it’s our responsibility - we created it, and it’s up to us to address it. Just three weeks ago, upon surveying the damage from Hurricane Ida, President Biden declared “We don’t have any more time.” We spoke to Microsoft’s first Chief Environmental Officer, Dr. Lucas Joppa, who leads the company’s sustainability strategy across its worldwide business. Joppa has been named to Fortune’s “40 under 40” list and is one of the world’s most sought after scientists. We also heard from Daniela V. Fernandez, Founder and CEO of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA). She has built SOA into a global organization that is cultivating and accelerating innovative solutions to protect and sustain the health of the ocean.
