Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) calls Trump’s efforts to stop a GOP border resolution before the election “appalling.”

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) on Thursday condemned Donald Trump, suggesting he was reportedly scuttling a bipartisan border deal for political gain.

Romney was asked about published reports that the former president was instructing congressional Republicans to not support a Senate border resolution before the 2024 presidential election because a deal could give President Biden a win on an issue that’s been hurting him in the polls.

“I think the border is a very important issue for Donald Trump. And the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and Congress people that he doesn't want us to solve the border problem, because he wants to blame Biden for it, is really appalling.”

“The reality is that we have a crisis at the border. The American people are suffering as a result of what's happening at the border. And someone running for president oughta try and get the problem solved, as opposed to saying, ‘Hey, save that problem. Don't solve it. Let me take credit for solving it later.”

This comes as the Senate continues to negotiate a bipartisan deal to pair border security measures and foreign aid to Ukraine and Israel.
