Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) appeared on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” to defend his bill dissolving the Reedy Creek Improvement District, Disney’s special tax district.

During the town hall, Laura Ingraham questioned DeSantis on whether his decision would backfire on the people of Florida. She noted that taxpayers could be on the hook for roughly $1 billion.

DeSantis shot back that Disney will pay its debts and “will for the first time actually live under the same laws as everybody else in Florida.

DeSantis said he expected legislative action against the bill. The legislature is therefore planning for this to go into effect in June 2023.

When Ingraham asked again if taxpayers would have to pay for Disney’s police, firefighters, and other important services, DeSantis called that “a fiction.” He asserted that Disney was already paying taxes. "They are Reedy Creek," he said. "They are paying money to run their operations. They will continue paying money to run their operations, and that will be true if the state is in charge of a district, if it's dissolved to the locals, it doesn't matter," he said.
