Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) spoke to reporters Friday after filing a motion to vacate against Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) after he pushed a spending package deal to avert a government shutdown through the House of Representatives with majority Democrat support.
“I filed the motion to vacate today but it’s more of a warning and a pink slip. I respect our conference, I paid all my dues to my conference, I’m a member in good standing, and I do not wish to inflict pain on our conference and to throw the House in chaos,” the Georgia Republican told reporters on the steps of the Capitol.
“But this is basically a warning, and it’s time for us to go through the process, take our time and find a new Speaker of the House that will stand with Republicans and our Republican majority instead of standing with the Democrats,” Greene continued.
The House passed the $1.2 trillion agreement to keep the government funded until Sept. 30 in a 286-134 vote. 185 Democrats voted to pass it along with 101 Republicans. A majority of Republicans voted against the bill. The House sends the measure over to the Senate just hours before the midnight deadline. All 100 members of the upper chamber need to greenlight a vote to pass the bill.
