Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) in an exclusive interview with Axios on Thursday refused to commit to certifying the 2028 election results if he is Donald Trump’s vice president.
Donalds is reportedly on the shortlist of candidates the former president is considering to be his 2024 running mate.
“If you have state officials who are violating the election law in their states because of an ‘emergency’ without going through the legislative process ... then no, I would not,” Donalds told Axios reporter Sophia Cai.
“So in your mind, no, you would not have certified the elections?” Cai asked the Florida Republican.
“As long as procedures in the states are being followed to the law that was outlined by the legislature and signed by governors and it was followed … then of course you do. But if you have evidence that the procedures were not followed…” Donalds replied.
“And what you’re saying is that you don’t believe that they were followed in 2020?” Cai followed up, to which Donalds immediately said, “Oh, I already know they weren’t followed in 2020.”
