President Biden on first anniversary of Evan Gershkovich's detainment in Russia: “We are not going to give up” on him.

President Biden on Friday said he won’t give up on Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich on the first anniversary of his detainment in Russia.

The president was asked about the detained journalist, who has been held in a Russian prison on charges widely condemned as fabricated.

"Do you have a message for Evan Gershkovich and his family today?" a reporter asked.

"Yes, I admire the hell out of him. We've tried everything we can so far.” Biden said outside Air Force One. “We are not going to give up."

Gershkovich was arrested in March of last year, while reporting from the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, and has since been held at Lefortovo prison in Moscow. His imprisonment has been repeatedly extended as he awaits trial.

In its Friday newspaper, The Wall Street Journal intentionally left a large section of its front page blank to represent the journalism that has been missing due to Gershkovich’s imprisonment.
