Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley on Monday theorized that former president Donald Trump isn’t spending a lot of money campaigning in South Carolina because “he’s saving it for his legal fees.”
“The campaign disclosures came out, and hear of his campaign donations, he paid $50 million in legal fees for personal cases against himself. Think about that. $50 million,” Haley said. “So now, it's clear why he wants me to get out of the race. It's because he needs more money to pay for his legal fees.”
Trump’s PACs in 2023 spent almost $50 million of donors’ money to pay for his legal fees, according to the most recent campaign finance reports, as he juggles four criminal cases.
“The rumor mill on the campaign trail was that he doesn't have much money. And I thought, 'Well, that can't be the case.' But I noticed he doesn't have any commercials on TV here,” Haley said at a campaign event in South Carolina. “He's not doing any events here. Up until now, he hasn't been here. And so I knew he was doing less and less, but now we know why.”
Haley went on to say that while she has “no issues with him and him running,” the United States is struggling with more pressing issues.
“What I do have issues with is, our country is in disarray, and the world is on fire, and we need to start to get to work to fix her. That's the problem.”
