2024 Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley on Wednesday defended the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos are human beings under state law.
“Embryos, to me, are babies,” Haley said in an NBC News exclusive interview with Ali Vitali. “When you talk about an embryo, you are talking about — to me, that's a life. And so, I do see where that's coming from, when they talk about that.”
The Alabama Supreme Court issued a first-of-its-kind ruling Friday that frozen embryos are human beings under state law and those who destroy them can be held liable for wrongful death.
The former South Carolina governor, whose son was conceived through artificial insemination, was also asked if she was concerned that the ruling could hurt those who seek IVF treatment:
“That's incredibly personal. It's incredibly sensitive. And I think that's the conversation the doctor needs to have with the patient,” Haley said. “Let's never underestimate the importance of the relationship between a doctor and patient when they're doing any of that.”
