Newly released footage from January 6th shows rioters attacking Capitol Police with a large Trump sign. The House has been holding hearings run by a special investigative committee to investigate what occurred on the fateful day that an angry mob, emboldened by President Trump, tried to stop the peaceful transfer of power. There was supposed to be another hearing on September 28th but it was postponed due to Hurricane Ian.
Since January 6th, over 900 people have been charged with crimes they committed that day. Most recently, a man who assaulted a police officer that day and provided a stun gun to another to use as a weapon, was sentenced to 86 months in jail. Many members of the far-right extremist group, the Oath Keepers, are being tried by the federal government, with the founder, Stewart Rhodes, on trial for sedition. A police officer was killed on January 6th and two more Capitol police officers committed suicide in the weeks following the attack.
