Jason Carter, the grandson of 99-year-old Jimmy Carter, gave a message about the former U.S. president during Night 2 of the DNC:
“My grandfather can't wait to vote for Kamala Harris,” Jason Carter said at the Democratic National Convention.
Carter, the oldest living U.S. president who will turn 100 years old October 1, has been in hospice for more than a year-and-a-half. After several hospitalizations and battles with cancer years earlier, he decided in February 2023 to enter hospice care to spend his remaining time alive at home in Plains, Georgia. Then, he outpaced the odds of survival: Hospice is prescribed for people who have less than six months to live, and just 6% in hospice live beyond a year.
“Though his body may be weak tonight, his spirit is as strong as ever,” the younger Carter said about the 39th president. “[Kamala Harris] reminds us all that the promise of America remains unchanged. We are one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. And my grandfather knows that with her as our next president, we will keep that promise.”
