President Joe Biden on Friday joked with reporters that he is rejoining the 2024 presidential race.
“Do you want to reconsider dropping out of the race?” a reporter asked the president at the end of his surprise appearance at the White House press briefing.
“I'm back in!” Biden joked.
Biden bowed out of the presidential race in July after a Democratic pressure campaign in response to his falling poll numbers. The president had been widely criticized for his poor debate performance against his Republican opponent, Donald Trump, in June.
Trump in August pushed a conspiracy theory that Biden would try to reclaim the nomination, even though there was no evidence of such a tactic and Biden had no legal mechanism to wrest the Democratic nomination from his vice president, Kamala Harris.
“I HEAR THERE IS A BIG MOVEMENT TO ‘BRING BACK CROOKED JOE,’” Trump said in a Truth Social post a few hours after Harris selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her running mate. Trump later claimed the current president might “crash” the Democratic National Convention to “take back the Nomination,” which did not happen.
“He feels that he made a historically tragic mistake by handing over the U.S. Presidency, a COUP, to the people in the World he most hates, and he wants it back, NOW!!!” Trump said on his social media platform without any evidence.
