Donald Trump made yet another joke about running for a third term Monday night as he spoke to House Republicans at a conference retreat held at the Trump National Doral Resort in Florida.
“I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100% sure,” Trump said in his remarks, prompting laughter from GOP lawmakers.
“I think I’m not allowed to run again. I’m not sure. Am I allowed to run again, Mike?” the president continued, calling out House Speaker Mike Johnson.
“I better not get you involved in that argument,” he said to the Louisiana Republican, who is also formerly a constitutional lawyer.
The U.S. Constitution sets a two-term limit for the presidency.
Last week, an ally to the president in the House, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN), drafted a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow someone to serve three terms as president if they do not serve two terms consecutively, which would allow Trump to run again. It would be virtually impossible to amend the 22nd Amendment in this present political landscape.
This isn’t the first time Trump has made a comment like this.
“It will be the greatest honor of my life to serve not once, but twice, or three times, or four times,” the president joked to supporters over the weekend at a Las Vegas event.
He also floated the idea just days after he won reelection in November, telling House Republicans, “I suspect I won’t be running again — unless you do something.”
