Florida House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell (D) on Monday slammed the state Supreme Court upholding a 15-week abortion ban — meaning a six-week ban will go into effect in 30 days.
“This is very troubling because Florida has been one of the few places — and actually the only place in the Southeast — where folks could come and get abortion care up to 15 weeks. So, there are a lot of folks who would travel here from out of state to get that care,” Driskell said. “Once that six-week ban goes into effect, it's basically like an outright ban, and there are so many women who are going to be without the access to health care that they need.”
Driskell emphasized that women throughout the Southeast will be left without access to necessary healthcare — especially women who lack the financial resources to travel out of state for treatment.
“If I can just kind of share how I'm feeling, it's like, this actually is not going to stop women from going to get abortions,” Driskell said. “What it is going to do is, for women who can't afford to travel out of state and go up north — to a state like New York, or go somewhere else where they could seek abortion care — for the women who can't afford it, they're just going to be stuck here in Florida.”
