Does Ron DeSantis for defense secretary have the support of … John Fetterman?
The Florida governor’s name has been floated as a potential backup nominee for Donald Trump’s defense secretary should the current pick, former Fox News host Pete Hegseth, fall through. Hegseth has been engulfed in scandals since Trump announced his nomination, with allegations of excessive drinking and sexual assault.
CNN asked Democratic senators, including Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman, for their thoughts on a potential DeSantis nomination.
“I’m considering voting ‘yes’ on DeSantis if he finally admits that he has lifts in his boots,” Fetterman told the network’s chief congressional correspondent, Manu Raju. “I’m sure he does. Maybe three inches, four inches at least.”
Raju also spoke to Sen. John Kelly of Arizona, who seemed to indicate that DeSantis would at least be a better pick to run the Defense Department.
“He’s a, you know, a governor of one of our biggest states. He served in Congress. He’s, you know, served in the military,” Kelly said. “So, I think he has what you would look at on paper as the requisite kind of experience you would want in a secretary of defense.”
