Tim Walz on Wednesday responded to President Joe Biden's "garbage" gaffe in an interview with "CBS Mornings," asserting that it does not undermine the Harris campaign's message of unity.
"President Biden was very clear that he's speaking about the rhetoric we heard at that [Trump's MSG rally]," Walz said. "So, it doesn't undermine it. People are hungry to come back together. They're hungry to find a unifying message."
While speaking to Latino supporters via video Tuesday evening, Biden apparently insulted Trump supporters by calling them garbage. However, Biden later clarified online that his comments about garbage were about the racist comments made at Trump's Madison Square Garden rally rather than Trump supporters.
"Does that undercut this closing message of unity from your campaign?" anchor Tony Dokoupil asked the Democratic vice presidential candidate.
"No, certainly not," the Minnesota governor said. "I've represented rural areas. I've represented Democrats, Republicans, independents — same thing with the vice president."
"Look, you saw a presidential speech last night at the Ellipse that is the best of America, one that's talking about unifying us," Walz noted, regarding Vice President Kamala Harris' closing argument campaign speech. "One that's talking about bringing folks to the table. One that the American tradition of disagreeing and debating but still doing it in a respectful manner."
"The frustration we've seen since January 6th, the frustration with Donald Trump's rhetoric of division, it does fire passions," Walz added.
