Democrat Sen. Murphy on GOP killing border deal for Trump: "That is heartbreaking to me as the lead negotiator…”

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) slammed Republicans for appearing to sabotage the Senate’s bipartisan border deal, saying it was “heartbreaking” to him as Democrats’ top negotiator on the agreement.

“Republicans decided yesterday and today that they want to preserve chaos at the border,” Murphy told MSNBC’s José Díaz-Balart. “Donald Trump told them, do not pass any bipartisan legislation because chaos at the border is good for me in my upcoming election. And that is the decision that Republicans have made.”

“That is heartbreaking to me as the lead negotiator, having spent the last four months — every single day, every Saturday, every Sunday — trying to craft a bipartisan compromise,” Murphy continued. “But it is also heartbreaking to the American people who don’t see immigration as a constant political issue to be fought over. They want there to be a solution. They want the two parties to come together. And the Republican Party has now made it very clear that they do not want to secure the border. They do not want to fix the problem of immigration. They just want to keep it open as a political sore. That is bad for the country.”
