Could Tony Hinchcliffe's “island of garbage” joke about Puerto Rico at Trump’s MSG rally cost Republicans the election?

The Recount's Grace Weinstein lays out why comedian Tony Hinchcliffe's “island of garbage” racist joke about Puerto Rico at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally might cost Republicans the election.

The Recount attended Trump's MSG rally on Sunday, when Hinchcliffe told his joke to the crowd, comparing Puerto Rico to a "floating island of garbage."

"The room was a mixed bag on that one, for sure," Weinstein reported. "The woman in front of me acted like it was the craziest, funniest thing she had quite literally ever heard in her life, and other people were audibly like, 'Oh God.'"

The racist joke prompted criticism from both Republicans and Democrats, with Trump telling ABC News' Rachel Scott that he did not know the comedian.

After Hinchcliffe told the joke, several Puerto Rican celebrities, such as Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, and Ricky Martin, voiced their support online for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. With more Puerto Ricans living in the continental United States than there are on the island — and who can vote — The Recount's Weinstein maps out how this could affect Trump's chances in the November presidential election.
