President-elect Donald Trump vowed to end birthright citizenship, suggested that Liz Cheney should be jailed, and floated deporting American citizens with their undocumented parents in an interview with “Meet the Press.”
In the wideranging conversation, his first sitdown interview since he won the election, Trump confirmed he wants to enact some far-right change and flirted with retribution for his political enemies.
Trump said he wants to end birthright citizenship — citizenship conferred to anyone born in the United States regardless of their parents’ immigration status — on Day 1, even though it is a protection enshrined in the 14th Amendment.
“Can you get around the 14th Amendment with an executive action?” anchor Kristen Welker asked the president-elect in an interview they taped Friday.
“Well, we're gonna have to get a change. We'll maybe have to go back to the people,” Trump said, before he falsely claimed no other country has the right to birthright citizenship.
Additionally, Trump said he will not urge the Justice Department to prosecute his political enemies, but he also said the January 6th Committee “should go to jail,” and he said he can’t guarantee that his planned tariffs won’t increase costs for American consumers.
“I can’t guarantee anything. I can’t guarantee tomorrow,” Trump said.
