House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) blasted the bill that would give the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) the authority to crack down on oil companies that the government can prove are charging excessive prices for fuel.
H R. 7688, also known as the “Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act,” comes in the wake of surging gas prices in the U.S. that are reaching historic highs in many areas around the country. The legislation is co-sponsored by Congresswoman Katie Porter (D-CA) and Congresswoman Kim Schrier (D-WA)
Scalise blamed President Biden as the cause of the fuel pricing problem, calling him the “Gouger in Chief.” He criticized the legislation further, saying it allows you to sue your local gas station if you don’t like the high prices, but it doesn’t allow you to sue President Biden, “the person who did these things that have increased the price of gasoline.”
Scalise and other Republicans are pushing instead for increased domestic energy production as the solution.
