New Hampshire State Representative Gerri Cannon, who is trans, took the floor to criticize a bill that would ban gender-affirming procedures for minors. She said it didn’t make sense for a law to put limits on medical science because it will inevitable fail “the test of time.”
She went on to address safety concerns about the procedure, saying: "On a personal note, I had to submit letters from my therapist and psychotherapist indicating that I was ready for this next step, even at the age of 69. I'm 71 now. Each of the three surgeons that interviewed me wanted to make sure that I knew what the procedure was and what it would entail so that they were comfortable that I was ready. Same thing is true with everyone, even 18-year-olds. The insurance company also needed to make sure that I had the right letters in place so they would agree to their portion of the bill. My surgery cost over $95,000. It wasn't a complex or expensive female-to-male procedure, which the cost is considerably higher.“
