Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) boss Elon Musk on Tuesday railed against the "unelected" federal bureaucracy while President Donald Trump took questions from reporters in the Oval Office.
"If you asked the founders today and said, 'What do you think of the way things have turned out?'" Musk said.
"Well, we have this unelected, fourth unconstitutional branch of government, which is the bureaucracy, which has in a lot of ways currently more power than any elected representative," the world’s richest man added, alongside Trump in the Oval Office.
Musk is an unelected official who leads the task force with a mission to slash federal spending and root out "waste" and "fraud" in the federal government.
"And this is not something that people want, and it does not match the will of the people," Musk said. "So, it's just something we've got to fix."
Trump also wants to slash the federal workforce and cut programs that don't align with his priorities. Musk claims that by ending diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) contracts and additional expenses, DOGE has saved the government $1 billion. However, the Musk-led group faces lawsuits, including over the legality of it gaining access to sensitive information in the Treasury Department's payment system.
