“Joe Biden did pretty well on the speech”: George W. Bush speechwriter praises Biden's D-Day speech on Fox News.

President Joe Biden on Thursday got praise for his speech that commemorated the 80th anniversary of D-Day — from former president George W. Bush’s chief speechwriter on Fox News.

“I think Joe Biden did pretty well on the speech,” Bill McGurn said on “Fox & Friends” in the morning. “No major stumbles. He looked in command. He wasn't shouting. I think he delivered it very well. I think the words were fine. It was a well-written speech. It hung together.”

Ceremonies and memorials were held throughout the day in France to commemorate the anniversary. Biden and other world leaders marked the day with living World War II veterans, some of whom are more than 100 years old.

For his part, Biden spoke at the Normandy American Cemetery, and will reportedly give another speech Friday that will draw allusions to President Ronald Reagan’s 1984 “boys of Pointe du Hoc” speech to stress the threats that democracy still faces as he seeks a second term.

“I was living in Belgium when Reagan came and delivered the 40th anniversary speech. So, I remember that very well. I was also in Europe right after [President Bill] Clinton gave the same speech 10 years later,” McGurn said. “Forty years later, Reagan is still a tough act to follow.”
