At a press conference on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) was asked if he believes the impeachment of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is simply “delayed temporarily” after the Republican-led House’s failed vote Tuesday night.
A reporter noted that the GOP would likely have the votes “if they have Steve Scalise here next week,” “if [Democrats] have a few people who are out,” or “if [Republicans] win the special election in New York” to replace George Santos.
“What does the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas have to do with the economy? Nothing. What does the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas have to do with addressing the affordability issues in the United States of America? Nothing,” Jeffries responded. “What does the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas have to do with fixing our broken immigration system and addressing the challenges at the border? Absolutely nothing.”
“It’s incredible to me that instead of extreme MAGA Republicans pivoting to working with us in a common sense way to solve real problems for the American people, their focus is on, how do we get Steve Scalise back to Washington so we can continue to do the bidding of Marjorie Taylor Greene and Donald Trump and impeach Secretary Mayorkas?” the New York Democrat continued.
“That tells you everything we need to know about this do-nothing, chaotic, dysfunctional, and extreme Republican majority,” Jeffries added.
