President Donald Trump’s “border czar,” Tom Homan, on Friday vowed to hound New York City Mayor Eric Adams if he does not follow through with his pledge to cooperate with federal immigration authorities like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“The alliance was never severed,” Adams, the Democratic mayor, said about his relationship with ICE and Homan as he sat next to him during a joint interview on “Fox & Friends.”
“If he doesn’t come through, I’ll be back in New York City, and we won’t be sitting on the couch,” Homan said, as he and Adams laughed. “I’ll be in his office, up his butt, saying, where the hell is the agreement we came to?”
“And I want ICE to deliver,” Adams said. “We’re going to deliver for the safety of the people of this city.”
The interview comes as Adams has fielded criticisms from fellow New York City Democrats that he may be in the pocket of the Trump administration. The Justice Department on Monday ordered local federal prosecutors to dismiss corruption charges against Adams, alleging a criminal trial would be too close to this year’s mayoral election — but leaving the door open to reviving charges after the election. In the weeks prior, some local Democrats had alleged Adams had cozied up to Trump, refused to criticize him, and aligned with him politically to get the case dropped or to get a pardon. Adams has denied those claims, but he has pushed for cooperating with ICE in ways that appear to extend beyond NYC’s sanctuary city law, which limits local agencies from assisting deportation efforts. Adams had initially called for expanded cooperation with federal immigration authorities prior to Trump’s election victory.
