First Lady Melania Trump on Monday called out Democratic leaders for not attending her roundtable on deepfakes and revenge porn.
“I was heartened to learn that Sen. [Ted] Cruz and Sen. [Amy] Klobuchar united to prioritize this fundamental matter. I must admit, however: I expected to see more Democrats — leaders — with us here today to address this serious issue. Surely as adults, we can prioritize America’s children ahead of parties and politics,” Trump said in her first public remarks since her return to the White House.
One Democrat, Rep. Ro Khanna of California, attended the event, which featured victims of sexually explicit deepfakes and revenge porn speaking about their ordeals. Trump urged the House to pass the “TAKE IT DOWN” Act, which would crack down on sexually explicit deepfakes and revenge porn.
“This legislation is essential for addressing the growing concerns related to online safety, protecting individual rights, and promoting a healthier digital environment,” Trump said.
Cruz introduced the bill, which would also require social media platforms and websites to have stricter protocols to remove nonconsensual intimate imagery once a victim is notified.
