“I believe the kids call it ‘rawdogging’”: CBS anchors comment about cardinals at papal conclave not checking phones.

A CBS News anchor on Wednesday awkwardly joked that cardinals participating in the papal conclave to replace Pope Francis are “rawdogging it” by not using their cellphones during the votes.

During Day 1 of the conclave to determine the new pope, CBS News papal contributor John Allen discussed the rules with “CBS Mornings” co-host Tony Dokoupil. Cardinals, as famously depicted in the film “Conclave,” have their cellphones confiscated when they are sequestered for the conclave so they cannot be influenced by the outside world as they vote for the new Holy Father.

“Most of them will tell you that while [each vote is] going on, they’re sitting, reading their breviary — that’s a book of prayers that clergy have — or praying a rosary, or doing — the one thing we know they’re not doing is checking Instagram, because their devices have all been confiscated,” Allen said.

“I believe the kids call it rawdogging it, if you’re gonna go through a long period of time without an electronic device,” Dokoupil said.

“Rawdogging,” as the kids say, is a euphemism for people engaging in baby-making without protection.

The conclave will move to a second day, as cardinals did not elect a new pope on the first day of balloting Wednesday. Francis was elected in 2013 after five rounds of voting over two days.
